Parking and Access
There are two ways to access Makalawena Beach:
Hike from Kekaha Kai State Park – Park at the Mahai‘ula section of the park, then hike about 1 mile over a rough lava path to reach the beach. The trail is exposed, so bring sun protection and plenty of water.
Four-Wheel Drive Route – A rugged, unpaved road leads to a closer parking area, but a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required. Even with 4WD, expect deep ruts, lava rocks, and slow going. If you're not comfortable with off-road driving, the hike is the best option.
