What to Expect

Rainbow Falls is located along the Wailuku River and is one of the most famous waterfalls in Hawaii. The 80-foot-tall and 100-foot-wide waterfall plunges over a lava cave that, according to Hawaiian legend, is the home of Hina, the mother of demigod Maui.

A short, paved path leads to an upper viewing area for a different perspective. If you visit early on a sunny morning, you may see the rainbows that give the falls their name, formed by the mist rising from the waterfall.

Swimming is not allowed due to strong currents and underwater hazards, but the viewing areas provide plenty of opportunities to admire and photograph the falls.
